How do you learn to draw? Where does creativity come from?

I do free-form author visits with lots of interactivity. The goal of the presentation is to help kids understand how my drawing works, and empower them to use drawing and art in general to tell whatever stories they want to tell.

To begin, I place enlarged posters of pages from my book  at the front of the room. I ask the kids about themselves to loosen them up (what they do, what they like, what they think of the illustrations, etc.) until they start asking me questions. We have fun and I enjoy it.

Then I show the kids how I draw, and lead them in some simple drawing exercises so they can try it for themselves.
